Measuring the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of Sunscreens

چکیده

Sun protection products, including sunscreen lotions, are designed to absorb or reflect the sun’s UV radiation to protect the skin from damage. The rating system for sunscreens specifies a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value, which can be thought of as a time factor for the protection of skin compared to exposure without any protection. For example, if a person would show visible erythema (sunburn) after five minutes of exposure, application of a sunscreen with SPF eight extends that time to five minutes times the protection factor of eight, or forty minutes. Scientific methods of evaluating the SPF of sunscreens have been developed and specified according to Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZ) standard 2604:1998. Other nations and regions have produced their own standards modeled after this original work, for example the COLIPA International Sun Protection Factor Test Method, most recently updated in 2006. These standards rely on diffuse transmittance measurements obtained using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer equipped with a diffuse reflectance accessory. This application note describes how sunscreen transmission measurements can be carried out using a Thermo Scientific EvolutionTM 600 spectrophotometer, a Diffuse Reflectance Accessory (DRA-EV-600) with 0.008mm pathlength quartz demountable cell, and VISIONliteTM (VL) MaterialsCalc software.

SunSmart Plus": the more informed use of sunscreens.

The sun protection factor (SPF) of sunscreens is determined by a testing protocol that specifies a sunscreen application rate of 2 mg/cm(2) on the skin. Most people, for cosmetic and economic reasons, only apply enough sunscreen to achieve an SPF of about a third or even a quarter of the level stated on the product. To increase public awareness of the problem, manufacturers could be required to...

Sunscreens: Is Looking at Sun Protection Factor Enough?

The sun protection factor (SPF) has widely been used to evaluate the protective value of sunscreens. However, SPF only reflects the effectiveness of the sunscreen to protect against acute sunburn which is mainly due to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. The deleterious effects of UVB are well known and UVB was believed in the past to be the spectrum responsible for the damages arising from ultravio...

Assessing the Current Market of Sunscreen: A Cross-Sectional Study of Sunscreen Availability in Three Metropolitan Counties in the United States

Sunscreen use is recommended for the prevention of sunburn and skin cancer. Little is known regarding sunscreen availability in high versus low income communities. We analyzed sunscreen availability in three large metropolitan counties to determine the relationship between availability and community demographics. We included sun care products in all pharmacies and supermarkets open as of July 2...

Sunscreen protection against cis-urocanic acid production in human skin.

Commercial sunscreens may offer some protection from immunosuppression induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, but agreement concerning the degree of protection is lacking. Cis-urocanic acid, formed by the photoisomerization of transurocanic acid is considered an important mediator of the cutaneous immunomodulation resulting from exposure to UV radiation. We investigated the effect of sunscreens...
